James Mansell, workplace wellbeing consultant

From the ring to the boardroom

James Mansell is the founder of Mansell, a workplace wellbeing consultancy working with central London organisations and the high performers inside them. He came to it by an unusual route: elite Muay Thai.

Fighting at that level teaches lessons no leadership programme can, and four of them shape how James works today.

01

Relationships come first.

No fighter gets good alone. James’s progress depended on coaches, training partners and the trust built between them over thousands of rounds. That’s why his work with organisations starts with people rather than programmes.

02

Perseverance is daily, not dramatic.

It means turning up to train when progress is invisible, knowing the gains arrive long after the effort.

03

Feedback is a gift with a short shelf life.

In the ring, feedback is immediate and unarguable. You learn to take it without defending yourself, adjust, and go again. James brings the same discipline to coaching: the most useful feedback is the kind you’d rather not hear, delivered early enough to act on.

04

Capability is built, not given.

For James, a growth mindset is a working assumption rather than a slogan. Every fighter, and every executive, is a work in progress.

Today James coaches high-performing corporate individuals and advises companies on the conditions that sustain performance: connection, recovery, honest feedback, and bodies built to last.

His conviction is simple. What makes an athlete durable makes a professional durable too.
